Centre for Ionics University of Malaya (C.I.U.M)

Introduction

Centre for Ionics University of Malaya was officially founded in 2007 by Prof. Dr. Abdul Kariem bin Mohd Arof although the idea came across his mind as early as 2005. Since then, C.I.U.M. has emerged as one of the leading research centers that has published more than 150 ISI-cited journal papers to-date. One of the objectives of the centre is to foster multidisciplinary research collaboration in the field of ionics and related areas, within university, within the country and international bodies.

The Centre for Ionics, University of Malaya (CIUM) main research activities include:

[1] Studies on natural and synthesized materials for possible applications as polymer electrolytes

[2] Engineer the polymer electrolytes for optimum enhanced conductivity

[3] Propose mechanism for ionic transport in such materials

[4] Characterization of ionic conductors

[5] Modeling of transport mechanism and fractal geometry

[6] Fabrication and characterization of devices

[7] Derive from plant resources and develop new materials for coating applications

[8] Developing biocomposites and nano-intermetalic materials for medical applications

[9] Develop a new system for separation for nano-material substances in term of analytical science

[10] Synthesis of new polymeric materials

 

Research Scope

Ionics is a key technology for storing, converting and using energy efficiently as well as protecting the environment. There has been much progress over the years in the understanding and development of materials required for ionic devices. Examples of such materials are lithium intercalation compounds in which lithium ions can enter and exit the material without significant structural changes. Approaches to the design of ionic devices such as lithium ion batteries, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and devices using electrochromic materials. In order to overcome the tremendous problems in developing wide spread commercial applications, it is necessary to intensify efforts in fundamental materials research tremendously.

The most prominent applications of ionics are:

[1] Solid electrolyte fuel and water electrolysis cells.

[2] High energy and power density batteries utilizing superionic electrolytes and ion-electron conducting electrodes for storing energy.

[3] Supercapacitors for fast storage and delivery of electrical energy.

[4] Photogalvanic solar cells that incorporate the use of ionic materials and semiconductors.

[5] Chemical sensors.

[6] Electrochromic systems.
